Maastricht University Medical Centre has a distinct technology platform for non-invasive imaging of ectopic fat mass, brown adipose tissue and for analysis of human energy metabolism. Using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) researchers within NUTRIM showed that a high fat diet increases fat deposition in the liver. Using MRI muscle cross-sectional area and fat deposition can be characterized.
Energy metabolism is studied using phosphor magnetic resonance
spectroscopy (31P-MRS). The ATP content can be measured in
different tissues (for example liver, muscle and heart). Using this
methodology, multidisciplinary research by the departments of Human
Biology, Movement Sciences and Radiology elegantly showed positive
effects of an exercise program on skeletal muscle metabolism of patients
